This work which is now hard to find is one of the three main contemporary records of the Great Exhibition (The others being the Official Catalogue and the Art Journal Catalogue of the applied arts).

Arguably the most comprehensive account of the Great Exhibition. The text gives a detailed description of the various sections and Courts of the Exhibition as well as the international stands and the individual exhibits. The engravings are based on original drawings and daguerretypes (an early use thereof) by photographic pioneers Richard Beard, Mayall and others. Richard Beard, 1802-1885, had purchased the patent from Daguerre in 1841 (according to Robert Leggat) and started legal proceedings against Mayall (born in Lancashire, but considered to be from Philadelphia). John Jabez Edwin Mayall, 1813 - 1901, produced 31 daguerrotypes of the Exhibition, 1/3 of those used by Tallis.
This publication is one of the main contemporary descriptions of the first world exhibition. Very Scarce in parts issue. Title pages for volumes 2 and 3 along with the list of illustrations and contents are bound in the back of the last part.

Rare book set in the original cloth binding with some wear/tear/scuffing to covers, spine, ends & corners, the spines have been professionally strengthened, and missing pieces re-backed with red cloth, binding is tight, intact, the pages plates with foxing / toning are generally clean and bright. A few plates with edge-wear.
