<b>The INDIAN TRIBES of the UNITED STATES
Their History, Antiquities, Customs, Religion, Arts, Language, Traditions,Oral Legends, and Myths Edited by FRANCIS DRAKE.
PHILADELPHIA: J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1884.

FIRST EDITION. FOLIO. 13" x 10" inches (LxB). Pp. 458; 455 pages + 100 engraved plates (incl. 10 color plates and some tinted). In the Original 1/2 black calf & pebbled cloth binding, with gilt lettered spines. Based on the material-rich investigations of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864) to the Ethnographie of the Indians of North America, predominantly from "" the Archives of Aboriginal Knowledge. Updated by Drake to around 1880. This constitutes one of the most important and massive works concerning the American Indian, a foundation stone of ethnological studies in America, and by far one of the most extensive single work on the American Indian issued in the 19th century.

The publication of this study is one of the most important compilations of information about the American Indian tribes still surviving at the time. This monumental work contains the ancient history, languages, myths and legends, art, songs, clothing, utensils, weapons, medicinal and ceremonial objects, histories of Indian wars, theories on emigration, and many other details gleaned from the native tribes.

Impressive Monographie illustrating for the history of the Indians. The singular overview of the Indian culture & traditions of the USA falls into the final phase of the development of the continental settlement area, when penetrating the white ones to the displacement of the Indians into reservations. The extermination of large herds of buffalo, destroyed in 1870 to 1890, the basis of life of most of the prairie Indians destroyed. The Decimation of the Indians, complete, also by epidemic diseases and alcohol, and a strong increase of the white population. Howes D-472. Quite simply a spectacular set of this important and influential work on Native American history and culture. NATIVE AMERICANS, ETHNOGRAPHY, US HISTORY, INDIAN TRIBES. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description

Rare book set in 1/2 black calf leather binding, scuffed, occasionally rubbed & blistered, some wear/tear/chipping to covers, spine, ends & corners.
