Firmly established as the standard textbook on its subject, this important work has been out of print for some time and much sought after by dealers and collectors throughout the antiquarian book trade. L.M. Bickerton’s book was unique for two reasons, its wealth of illustrations and its extensive bibliography by Robert Elleray. Interest in eighteenth century drinking glasses continues to be very strong and collectors are encouraged by the enormous variety of bowls and stems which are an eloquent testimony to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of glass workers of the time. In the last revision the author had extended the illustrations to over one thousand. This made the book particularly valuable, since it was obviously impossible to show every minor variation although the sheer number of examples included provided a very good representation of what collectors were likely to find. A chapter was also included giving much fuller definitions of the classes of drinking glasses, avoiding the necessity of constant reference to other authorities. Special coverage of baluster-stemmed and engraved glasses was also included. Robert Elleray contributed the superb bibliography of English glass, the most detailed ever produced on the subject. Collectors, dealers, auction houses and anyone interested in this fascinating facet of the eighteenth century decorative arts will welcome this timely reprint.
