Williamsburg furniture curators Hurst and Prown have compiled a veritable catalogue raisonne of Southern decorative arts relating to furniture. This glorious work focuses not only on the fine artistry and diversity of the functional items but also the historical background of the Chesapeake, Low Country, and Backcountry regions of Virginia and North and South Carolina through brief articles on each of the regions. The second portion contains the catalog of works focusing on seating furniture, tables, case furniture (chests, tall clocks, cabinets), and other forms (cradles, beds, screens). Beautiful illustrations highlight each of the 183 objects from simple, roughhewn elegance to detailed, ornate craftsmanship. Descriptions of each object include a brief historical sketch, construction, condition, material, dimensions, marks, a provenance, and a brief bibliography. A glossary of furniture terms, including diagrams and line drawings, is also featured. This catalog is highly recommended for most decorative arts collections and general collections in major research libraries.
