Ironwork: Dynamic Details by Dona Meilach Here is an exceptional insight into the unique ironwork created by today’s artist-blacksmiths. Over 250 color photographs display details of contemporary iron objects, including flowers, grape clusters, leaves, small and large animals that attest to the blacksmith’s role as a sculptor. There are amazing scrolls, folds, twists, textures, and weaves not normally associated with the hard material. With heat, hammer, talent, and muscle, the modern artist-blacksmith is forging exciting forms that permeate our surroundings. The casual viewer may often overlook details of small elements used to create a magnificent whole. Dona Z. Meilach shows how focusing on the iron details of flowers, leaves, and amazing critters makes ordinary fences, gates, and chandeliers extraordinary. Functional joints become beautiful elements for furniture, fireplace accessories, candlestick holders, and other iron items we use daily. Dona’s approach will open one’s eyes to "see" and respect this burgeoning art form.
This stimulating book is a must for metalworkers, designers, artists, gallery owners, art lovers, and museum directors.

100 Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes, 1856-1956 Covering the 100 years that Winchester and its predecessor companies, Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and New Haven Arms Co., produced cartridges in New Haven, this is the first detailed study ever done on cartridge boxes from the era of the modem gun. Coverage includes all the calibers cataloged for every rifle model from 1856 to 1956. With over 1,400 pictures, all in full color, this book also includes a Pricing Guide and a Rarity Guide. It is unlikely that the incredible number of varieties of Winchester cartridge boxes pictured will ever again be assembled for presentation to the collecting public. Whether you want to date your collectible box or determine which box would be appropriate as a contemporary display piece with your Winchester rifle, this is the book to own.

Palladio's Architecture and Its Influence: A Photographic Guide
This book includes a brief biography on Andrea Palladio with insight on his _The Four Books of Architecture. It also mentions the introduction that many Americans have to Palladian architecture-Thomas Jefferson. The scope of his influence on Jefferson is evident simply by looking at Monticello and the University of Virginia.

The authors divide Palladio's works into three categories: villas, palaces and churches. They also include Palladian designs in England, Scotland and America. Each design is profiled with pictures and given roughly 2 - 4 paragraphs of description. The information provided is easy to read but not so simplistic that it seems superficial. The photographs are excellent and often show fascinating detail. Unfortunately though, all photos are b/w and sometimes color would have been helpful. That reason and the basic nature of the text caused me to rate this at four stars rather than five. Experts and scholars should look elsewhere unless they are only after the illustrations. For students and casual observers, this book is a fantastic way to begin learning about Palladio.

11006
Daughters of Painted Ladies by Elizabeth Pomada Painted Ladies, the authors' 1978 homage to San Francisco's multicolored Victorian houses, inspired many homeowners elsewhere to forsake traditional gray or white housepaint in favor of a more colorful pallette. In this sequel, Pomada and Larsen show examples of Victorian houses across America, the criterion of inclusion being the use of at least three contrasting shades of paint (some use more than 30). As the authors rightly point out, no two of the houses are exactly alike. They range from tastfully exuberant (the Octagon House in Irvington, N.Y.) to sedately tonal (a Queen Anne-style house in Salem, Ind.) to just plain garish. Pomada and Larsen laud such "creative" touches as signing one's house as a work of art and are particularly fond of "interpretations" of 19th century colors. Still, the text is loaded with information and gives helpful tips about embarking on the daunting job of creating a Painted Lady.

11004
Painted Ladies: San Francisco's Resplendent Victorians In this, her first book about the modernizing-by-paint of 19th-Century houses, she concentrates on San Francisco, where the Painted Lady style was invented during the heyday of the hippies. The houses shown in the gorgeous full-color photographs range from the elegantly somber (like Don Parodi's many-bayed house on p. 23) to the minutely detailed (the imposing Colonial Revival mansion on p. 20 and the Bert Franklin rowhouse opposite) to the downright gaudy (Rhine & Kennedy's fire-engine-red offices on p. 29, a tiny lavender cottage on p. 50, a literally rainbow-striped confection on p. 69). If you can't make it to San Francisco in person--or if you've been, and want to relive the glories of its vintage housing--this book belongs on your shelf.

Arguably the most comprehensive account of the Great Exhibition. The text gives a detailed description of the various sections and Courts of the Exhibition as well as the international stands and the individual exhibits. The engravings are based on original drawings and daguerretypes (an early use thereof) by photographic pioneers Richard Beard, Mayall and others. Richard Beard, 1802-1885, had purchased the patent from Daguerre in 1841 (according to Robert Leggat) and started legal proceedings against Mayall (born in Lancashire, but considered to be from Philadelphia). John Jabez Edwin Mayall, 1813 - 1901, produced 31 daguerrotypes of the Exhibition, 1/3 of those used by Tallis.<p> This publication is one of the main contemporary descriptions of the first world exhibition.
