Click for more detail...
10609
Jackson's Silver & Gold Marks of England, Scotland & Ireland by Ian Pickfor Sir Charles Jackson’s English Goldsmiths and Their Marks has long been the classic reference book on British antique silver hallmarks.
First written in 1905 and last revised in l921,it was a mammoth work which remained in print unchanged for many years. This major new edition has been compiled by a distinguished team of experts to take account of the vast store of information which has been unearthed as a result of much detailed and wide-ranging research over the last seventy years.
The text has been extensively updated with over 10,000 corrections and an enormous amount of entirely new material. Jackson did not have access to the plates of makers’ marks held at the London Assay Office and there are 1,000 corrections to London 18th century makers’ marks alone. There are also corrections to the York date cycle, reallocation of makers previously thought to be from Poole and Belfast, and fundamental revision to the section on Scotland. Many ideas and attributions have changed since Jackson assembled his work, and some of the makers that he overlooked are now known to be of major significance.
In view of the sheer extent of the changes, many treasured but battered copies of the original must be replaced. When account is taken of financial aspects, particularly the large price differentials between the work of major craftsmen and the lesser makers, accurate attribution is essential, and the older editions will be seen to be dangerously obsolete.
There are not many standard reference works which survive for eighty years without being displaced. This revision will reconfirm Jackson’s status as the bible for all antique silver enthusiasts.

10573
The Compendium of Chester Gold & Silver Marks 1570-1962 by M. H. Ridgway This is the first publication in a single work of all known Chester punch marks, and continues the tradition of the standard volumes of Jackson, Grimwade, Culme and Pickford. It is also the first time that the twentieth-century Chester marks have been published. It is produced in dictionary format, in alphabetical order from 1570, the date of the earliest known mark, to 1962 at which time the Chester assay office was closed. The authors, both members of the silver society, were given unlimited access to the Chester assay office records covering 1686 to 1962, and to the Chester Goldsmith’s Company records dating from the 16th century.
The compendium has four sections. The preface provides an historical background and details of all extant records and copper plates. Part 1 is devoted to assay office marks, with a full set of date letter tables to assist the reader in dating wares. Part 2 covers nearly 10,000 entries for makers’ marks, including pictograms and monograms. Finally, the appendices include items on assay volumes and charges, thimble makers, and Liverpool watchcase makers.
Since over 2,000 of the entries have Birmingham addresses, the new work will also enhance available information on jewellers and silversmiths working in this important trade center. The format of the marks’ tables and the extensive index will also allow future research into the relationships between companies and

Understanding Antique Silver Plate by Stephen Helliwell One of the best books I've seen on antique silverplate. Lots of information on history, techniques, and how to recognize old Sheffield pieces. Plenty of beautiful photos. A great book for anyone interested in learning about old silver.

The discovery of silver plate came about as a result of a search for a cheaper alternative to solid silver. Its appearance widened the market for articles otherwise only fashioned in silver and made them accessible to different levels of society.
The discovery and development of fused plate, more commonly known as Old Sheffield plate, played the major role from the 1750s to the mid-nineteenth century. This was followed in due course by the development of the mid-nineteenth century process, electroplating.

There is written and detailed illustrated advice for the collector of items made in all these processes and in particular on distinguishing genuine pieces. Drawings and photographs of marks, where used, are provided. This popular and affordable collecting area has seen a surge of interest in recent years and prices have been very much on the increase.

The Author

Stephen Helliwell was a Director of Christie’s South Kensington from 1991 to 1996.

He originally started work at Christie’s as a porter after graduating from the London School of Economics and subsequently specialised in the field of silver. He was also the author of Collecting Small Silverware.

Paktong - The Chinese Alloy in Europe 1680-1820 by Keith Pinn Paktong

Keith Pinn

Paktong, a rare Chinese alloy, imported in small quantities during the eighteenth century, was used by European craftsmento make domestic objects in imitation of silverware.
This metal has been shrouded in mystery since it was first recorded by Western travellers in the seventeenth century. The vital silver-coloured ingredient, nickel, was not identified in the West until the second half of the eighteenth century, and it was to be a further fifty years before scientists were able to perfect a viable imitation of paktong.

In more recent times the mystery of paktong has lain in the lack of documentary evidence concerning its use in the Georgian period. This has given rise to many myths and speculative theories about the metal. Now, at last, the author’s research among contemporary records hasenabled the history of paktong in eighteenth century England to be piecedtogether.

A well-illustrated study and discussion of more than 100 paktong pieces will help readers identify and understand objects made from this scarce and highly-prized Chinese metal.
