Spode-Copeland-Spode by Vega Wilkinson

Spode-Copeland-Spode

Vega Wilkinson

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Spode Copeland Spode story has been compiled from hitherto unpublished material from the family archives at Trelissick Mansion, Cornwall, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Copeland, and from detailed research of the records in the Spode archives.
It traces not only the history of the wares which were produced for over two hundred years but describes the evolution of the first small Spode pottery to the development of a nine acre site in the centre of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It also traces the development of bone china and parian ware throughout the changing market conditions of this time and the adaptation of productionfrom coal firing to the use of gas and electricity.

It emphasizes the importance of the family's dedication to the product and the skill of the workers they employed.

It records the names and specialities of over 200 artists and gilders and the appendices have been compiled to help collectors to identify many ofthese, showing the vast range of ware which is collectable today.

The Author

Vega Wilkinson’s interest in Copeland began in the late 1970s as a collector. Since the mid-1980s she has been studying the art and history of the pottery and the people who made it.
She has published articles on Copeland and written the guide to the Copeland China Collection at Trelissick in Cornwall. She has researched in the Spode archive and Copeland family papers and is now working on a dictionary ofceramic artists in Britain.

Vega Wilkinson is married with two children and, though born in Yorkshire, has lived in Staffordshire for many years.

Spode Transfer Printed Ware 1784-1833 by D. Drakard & Paul Holdway Spode Transfer Printed Ware 1784-1833
A New, Enlarged and Updated Edition of the Complete Guide
David Drakard and Paul Holdway

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spode Transfer Printed Ware, first published in 1983, has now been extensively enlarged and revised, listing and illustrating every known transfer print issued by the Spode family at their Works in Stoke-on-Trent.
More than 100 additional prints have been discovered since 1983 and are included in this new edition.
Over 350 further illustrations are included, covering the shapes of the ware found decorated with printed designs, Spode marks found on the ware and the methods of manufacture used in the past and those practised today.

Many of the 900 illustrations are in colour, particularly the blue and white printed ware, and the informative text discusses early ceramic printing techniques such as bat printing and pluck and dust printing.

No other manufacturing potter can match the long history of the Spode Works, which still holds vast stocks of engraved copperplates, including those from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries used for the decoration of the wares illustrated in this book.

Definitive guide which catalogues three types of printed Spode techniques
Over 900 illustrations, many of the blue printed ware and shapes in colour
Each pattern and shape individually photographed.

Totally revised second edition, including much new research.

The Author
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Drakard has collected English printed pottery, particularly underglaze blue transfer printed Spode, since 1963.

A Vice-President of the English Ceramic Circle, he is also the author of a book on print decorated wares made during the reign of George III. 19th century Lustreware by Michael Gibson 19th Century Lustreware

Michael Gibson

The Book
----------------------------------------
Lustre is a form of decoration which can be applied to any form of ceramic body, be it earthenware or porcelain. Its popularity in the nineteenth century was immense and there was a huge export market from Britain to Europe and America. Practically every pottery in the north of England had a go at this new and exciting form of decoration.

There have been surprisingly few books on lustreware and most of those that have appeared have suffered from a lack of coloured illustrations, almost an essential for a proper coverage of and understanding of the subject. With this new book the situation is redressed. Of the 300 illustrations some 150 are in colour and large numbers in both categories are of pieces, some extremely rare, that have never been seen in print before. Among these are examples from the vast but little-known Gutman collection in the United States, to which country large quantities of lustreware were exported in the nineteenth century.

The author is one of the foremost authorities on lustreware and has incorporated all the latest research into his text. In some cases this has necessitated a re-thinking of previously held theories, which adds greatly to its interest for collectors. The reader is taken from the beginnings of lustreware in 1805 through its heyday in the first half of that century, with later lustrewares also touched on. The techniques of lustring are described in some detail and there is a comprehensive coverage of the companies and personalities involved in its manufacture.

The first well-illustrated book on lustreware.
Much new research and re-assessment of previous theories.
A very popular and affordable collecting area.

The Author

Until retirement, Michael Gibson was Managing Editor of a leading book publishing house. He was a keen collector of and delver into the history of lustred ceramics and author of the only two modern books on the subject. He was a member of the Northern Ceramic Society and contributor to their Newsletter. In contrast, he also wrote books on roses and rose history on which he was an internationally recognised authority. He was past President of The Royal National Rose Society and holder of their Dean Hole Medal.

Silver Boxes

Eric Delieb

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The silver box has fascinated and intrigued collectors for many centuries. It is perhaps safe to say that no other objets de vertu have attracted such vivid attention from maker and collector alike.
This book is a comprehensive study of the subject which concentrates on the development of the silver box in England from the 16th to the late 19th centuries. Because the interest of collectors lies not so much in the shape or type of boxes as in the wide variety of uses to which they have been put and the splendid enrichment lavished upon them, there is a penetrating analysis of the roots and derivations of ornament. The full colour illustrations show boxes with as many diverse forms and uses as possible.

The term box covers any receptacle (unless it is a vessel) whether it is a snuffbox, a pyx or a lancet case for use in phlebotomy, as long as it possesses a lid, hinged or otherwise. The usual snuffboxes and vinaigrettes appear in plenty but they have been carefully selected to show the ingenuity of silver craftsmen. More importantly perhaps we find the splendid variety of ‘special purpose’ silver boxes: religious, dental and medical, skippet and seal, Masonic, jewel caskets, sweetmeat boxes, pomanders - there is even the unique sumptuous Henry VII ‘Barber-Surgeon’s case’ of circa 1512 with its glowing enamels. There is much hitherto unpublished material including pieces from private collections and articles from Livery Companies and other institutions.

Wide ranging survey of silver boxes - their use and decoration
A very collectable area of silver
The product of much original research

The Author
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric Delieb is a London antique silver dealer, who conducts a highly successful business on both sides of the Atlantic and also devotes much of his time to research into Old English Silver.

Author of a standard bibliography of books on hallmarks, many articles in antique journals and Investing in Silver, his name has become particularly associated with ‘Collectors’ Silver’, a subject that forms the basis of his world-wide correspondence.

The Ceramic Career of M. Louise McLaughlin by Anita Ellis - hardcover The Ceramic Career of M. Louise McLaughlin by Anita J. Ellis

According to Anita Ellis, a curator at the Cincinnati Art Museum, M. Louise McLaughlin (1847-1939) is "one of the major figures in American ceramic history who helped to establish the artist/potter tradition in America." Ellis's book offers an in-depth and well-documented look at McLaughlin's life and her career in ceramics. McLaughlin is known for her contributions to three branches of ceramics: china painting, underglaze slip decoration, and porcelain. She wrote three ceramics manuals, which together sold 20,000 copies, plus a history of the world, published in 1923, and an unpublished study of 17 major military battles.
McLaughlin, who was a rival of Rookwood's founder, Maria Longworth Nichols, faced gender discrimination throughout her career. She had wanted to become a portrait painter, but this was seen as a man's profession. "Because of her sex," writes Ellis, "society did not reward McLaughlin for her portraits on canvas, but rather for her work in ceramics." Ellis notes that fewer than 100 McLaughlin pieces are known today, even though she likely produced many more. Ellis hopes that renewed interest in McLaughlin will bring many more of her pieces to the fore. Ellis's book includes photographs of McLaughlin, her family and friends, and examples of her ceramic wares, many of which are in the collection of the Cincinnati Museum of Art.
