10601
20th Century Ceramic Designers in Britain by Andrew Casey Throughout the twentieth century certain British ceramic designers have made an outstandingly influential contribution to the pottery industry.
Against a backdrop of great artistic, economic and social change their ability to anticipate and to respond to the latest trends in art and design enabled them to lead the pottery market, rather than follow. In responding to the practical needs of the customer their work proved popular and commercial in its day and is now much sought afterby collectors. Whilst many of the featured designers were most prolific and celebrated during the period between the wars, this publication also covers the austerity years of the forties and fifties. It then takes us through the innovative and expansive sixties and seventies, right up to the end of the century.
This work, the first major study of its kind, concentrates on those pioneering designers who attempted to improve the quality of both shape and decoration by creating modern tableware designs that were contemporary, practical and attractive. Some of the designers such as Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper have established reputations and there are many other important figures such as Keith Murray, John Clappison and Truda Carter.
Each chapter gives an individual detailed account of each particular designer's contribution to pottery design and discusses their background, influences and how they attained the position. The text is supported by high quality colour and black and white archive images, some hitherto unpublished.
The designers discussed are: Daisy Makeig-Jones, Charlotte Rhead, Clarice Cliff, Truda Carter, Susie Cooper, Eric Slater, Millicent Taplin, VictorSkellern, Keith Murray, Eric Ravilious, Alfred Read, Jessie Tait, KathieWinkle, John Clappison, Eve Midwinter, Robert Jefferson and Susan Williams-Ellis.

10598
The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain Volume 1 1751-1851 by John Sandon It contains detailed new information which has emerged following excavations on the original factory sites. Illustrated for the first time are some major finds which shed new light on the first few years of porcelain making in Worcester.
As well as more than six hundred dictionary entries, Volume I includes a complete historical survey, the most comprehensive illustrated section on marks to date, extracts from contemporary visits to the factories and a select bibliography. A significant section on redecoration classifies the controversial pieces which have been altered at some time to increase their desirability, suggesting when and where this redecoration took place, and highlights pitfalls for collectors.
For the first time details of every principal workman connected with the factories who can be identified, every named pattern, and all the principal shapes and forms of decoration are gathered together in one volume. The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain is the most comprehensive study of these important porcelain factories and is bound to become the standard work of reference on the subject.

Godden's Guide to Ironstone Stone & Granite Wares by G. Godden

Surprisingly, this is the first book to be devoted to British Ironstone China and the related stone china and granite ceramic bodies. Yet they are as important in their way as the well-known, highly respected and well documented English creamwares or indeed bone china itself.

Initially, the ironstone-type bodies were introduced, like most European ceramics, to emulate, rival and undersell the vast and popular importations of Oriental porcelains. Not only did the ironstone manufacturers succeed in this ideal but they progressed to take over the trade and to supply the world with inexpensive but very durable tablewares.

British potters in the middle and latter half of the nineteenth century won markets undreamed of by the pioneers in the trade. Major manufacturers such as Mason and Spode produced superbly potted, richly decorated, ironstone or stone china table services and ornamental goods. The smaller firms concentrated on less expensive utilitarian objects that were shipped to all parts of the world for everyday use. The world was to eat off, or drink from, English ironstone-type wares during the larger part of the nineteenth century.

This book gives details of some 350 British manufacturers of ironstone type wares; their working periods and basic marks. Many of these firms and partnerships have not previously been noted or researched. The Appendices include lists of manufacturer's initial marks and Trade names; the registered ironstone shapes and the British ironstone manufactures.

The first book devoted exclusively to British Ironstone China and related wares.

Written by a leading authority in British ceramics.

Lists marks and trade names

Black Basalt - Wedgwood and Contemporary Manufacturers by Diana Edwards The prominence of Josiah Wedgwood as a developer of this material ensured his factory was the market leader when basalt was at its most fashionable, towards the latter part of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, but many other factories produced what appear to be almost identical products.
Hitherto there has been no definitive catalogue or means of identification but Diana Edwards’ research has gone a long way to make what distinctions are feasible. Over 170 other factories are noted as makers of black basalt, and the author gives much new information on their histories and products. She also examines the historical antecedents of English black basalt and discusses unmarked and unidentified wares and Continental and foreign blackware manufacturers.
The twenty-four colour and 501 black and white illustrations (many of which have never before been published) provide an invaluable guide to the identification of wares from different factories and ensure that this will be the standard reference for many years to come.

10568
Victorian China Fairings The Collector's Guide by Derek Johnson Fairings were definitely made for the huge English Fair market. The word “fair” comes from the Latin feria meaning holiday, a great day for the masses, a chance to catch up on gossip, fashions, new ideas and generally to have a good time and perhaps buy or win a small china ornament. Today we call these small German ornaments of the Victorian/ Edwardian period, Fairings.
This comprehensive work is the definitive guide for the novice and experienced collector of fairings, covering the history, values, repairs and fakes, with over 400 beautiful photographs in colour. These photographs are all indexed for quick, easy reference as to identification and value. The only book available on the subject, Victorian China Fairings – The Collectors’ Guide is an absolute must-have reference for collectors, auctioneers and dealers.
The Author
Derek H. Jordan has been a keen collector of Fairings for twelve years and owns the foremost collection of pieces in the world. He was a founder member of The Fairings Collectors’ Society.

10559
Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Era by P.D. Gordon Pugh When this book was first published in 1970 it provided what the collector of Staffordshire portrait figures had long wanted – a vast photographic reference to the fifteen hundred or so portrait figures which were produced in the nineteenth century and which encapsulate so much of the history of Victorian England.
As a collecting subject these figures are immensely popular throughout the English speaking world and beyond, and the increases in prices being recorded confirm the continued interest.
Why are Staffordshire figures so popular? They are extremely decorative and also often have a naïvete and charm which strikes a sympathetic chord among a wide range of collectors, while the subjects of the figures themselves, as well as the events which they record – from murderers to politicians, from soldiers to actresses -; are the very fabric from which history is made.
This book is a revised edition of the standard work affectionately known as 'Pugh'. While it is based on the 1981 revised edition and carefully follows the system of reference numbering, the text has been moved so that the 900 black and white illustrations and captions are now close together and the book therefore a great deal easier to use.
The 62 colour photographs have been taken for this edition at the City Museum and Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, where the bulk of Surgeon Rear-Admiral Pugh’s collection now rests.
Staffordshire Portrait Figures is an invaluable work, not only because of the wide range of information it contains but also because it looks at collecting pitfalls such as forgeries, fakes, reproductions and repairs.
The Author
The late P.D. Gordon Pugh, O.B.E., was educated at Lancing College and Jesus College, Cambridge, and the Middlesex Hospital.
He qualified as a doctor and pursued his distinguished medical career within the Navy, rising to the rank of Surgeon Rear-Admiral. His other publications on both medicine and ceramics include Nelson and his Surgeons, Naval Ceramics and Heraldic China Mementoes of the First World War.

This long awaited book was first published in 1970

Staffordshire Potters 1781-1900 by R. K. Henrywood Staffordshire Potters 1781-1900

Dick Henrywood

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This book presents a comprehensive list of manufacturers working in the Staffordshire Potteries in the period between 1781 and 1900.
This area produced some ninety per cent of the pots made in England and is of prime importance in the study of British ceramics. The list has been assembled by extracting the data contained in directories published in the period, covering more than 10,000 entries from some sixty-one volumes.
The book itself consists of introductory chapters covering historical aspects of the survey, a fascinating evaluation of the area under review and the directory of authors and publishers, followed by two major chapters — the assembled alphabetical list of over 3,000 potters and listings of all the original directory entries in date order.
This is the most comprehensive list of Staffordshire potters ever published and includes much information unavailable in existing literature. The work covers all potters, regardless of their products, working between 1781 the date of the earliest surviving directory, and the beginning of the twentieth century, by far the most popular period for collectors. The book will easily become a standard reference work for all who are interested in British pottery and porcelain, collected throughout the world.

WEDGWOOD - THE NEW ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY BY ROBIN REILLY Wedgwood - The New Illustrated Dictionary

Robin Reilly

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When it was first published in 1980 The Dictionary of Wedgwood rapidly established itself as the standard reference for museums, collectors dealers and auction houses. Now Robin Reilly has revised and enlarged this essential reference work after much intensive research among the Wedgwood archives and in many of the world’s most important collections.
Besides correcting dates and descriptions in the earlier editions, he has included his latest discoveries about jasper and the terracotta body (wrongly identified for more than a century) and added much information about Wedgwood’s nineteenth and twentieth century wares which are of growing interest to collectors. He discusses the entire range of wares, the manufacturing processes, the subjects and the styles of decoration and their sources, not forgetting the men and women who played such an important part in the firm’s direction. Also discussed are the firm’s policies and designs, the distinguishing marks used in every period are illustrated and a comprehensive bibliography provides invaluable details for those wishing to study the subject in even greater depth.

This is a book of exceptional value to anyone interested in Wedgwood, English pottery or ceramic history. This important new edition with 133 colour plates and 1,080 black and white illustrations will make it possible for all readers, whatever their previous knowledge of pottery and porcelain, to identify and date Wedgwood confidently and accurately.

WORCESTER PORCELAIN 1751-1790 - THE ZORENSKY COLLECTION Zorensky Collection of Worcester

Simon Spero

It is relatively little known to collectors either in Britain or North America. Divided into sixteen chapters, corresponding to period and styles of decoration, the collection embraces every facet of the factory’s production during its initial forty years.

In illustrating seven hundred pieces in colour, this volume breaks new ground and enables the reader to trace the changing styles as they evolved, from the chinoiserie of the 1750s through to the sumptuous coloured grounds of the 1770s, inspired by Meissen and Sèvres.

In addition to a detailed commentary on each piece and informative introductions to the chapters, the authors have widened the parameters for a volume of this kind by placing Worcester porcelain within its eighteenth century social and historical context. The exterior artistic and commercial influences which defined production are discussed, together with contemporary wages and prices, social customs and culinary tastes. These are presented in two essays, an expansive portrait of England in 1751 and a full history of the factory during the first four decades of its long and distinguished lifetime, from 1751 until the present day.

The Zorensky Collection of eighteenth century Worcester is undoubtedly the largest and most comprehensive still in private ownership anywhere in the world.

Simon Spero is a leading authority on eighteenth century English porcelain. He lectures extensively on the subject and organises porcelain seminars throughout the world. He is the author of three other books on English porcelain and has contributed numerous articles to specialist magazines. When not writing or lecturing he carries on his business as a highly respected porcelain dealer from his shop in London.

This is John Sandon’s fifth specialist book on Worcester porcelain, making him the most prolific writer on the subject, much respected for his dedicated research as well as his enthusiasm. Twenty years as a specialist and director of one of the world’s leading auction houses place John at the forefront of the latest ceramic research. A popular lecturer, he contributes to numerous magazines and regularly appears on the BBC’s ‘Antiques Roadshow’.

A Collector's History of English Pottery A Collectors History of English Pottery

Griselda Lewis

A Collector’s History of English Pottery covers the subject with insight and wit. Various working potters have commented on Griselda Lewis’s previous books, and particularly how, by linking their work to that of earlier times, she has put it into perspective. This continuity is not the least of the charms of English Pottery.
Another aspect of this fascinating craft is humour as the author shows in her examples of 17th century slipware chargers, 18th century pew groups, 19th century Staffordshire figures, and even modern kitsch. There is also much else to delight the collector in this fascinating book.

It would be hard to find a more original group of illustrations and they are chosen with a most individual and lively taste… this book triumphantly succeeds in the most difficult task of all, that of arousing enthusiasm. I unhesitatingly recommend it, whether to open experienced eyes to new delights or to introduce the newcomer to the pleasures of English pottery…’ Michael Archer, Deputy Keeper Ceramics Department, Victoria and Albert Museum, writing in The Connoisseur in a review of the first edition.

In this new edition there are nearly 700 monochrome and 62 full colour illustrations.

This book gives a provision of invaluable information on the distinguishing attributes of the many different styles of pottery manufactre: from slipware to studio pottery, as well as of the different factories of the well known - such as wedgewood.
It gives an overall perspective of the developmant od pottery styles and techniques from earliest times to the 20th century.

It explains and instructs and is accompanied by a wealth of informative illustrations of pieces that appear on the market rather than examples from museums.

This is a highly readable text that is both fascinating and witty.

Griselda Lewis is the author of An Introduction to English Pottery, A Picture History of English Pottery, and in collaboration with John Lewis Pratt Ware: English and Scottish relief decorated and underglaze coloured earthenware 1780-1840.

Susie Cooper A Pioneer of Modern Design by A. Casey & A. Eatwell Susie Cooper
A Pioneer of Modern Design
Edited by Andrew Casey and Ann Eatwell

The Book

As a woman in an industry run by men, it was her ability to anticipate the mood of the day and understand market trends that enabled Susie Cooper to keep ahead of her competitors. Cooper made her name through designing for and managing her own company. This was not, however, the only way in which she was unique; she produced modern pots at affordable prices and provided customers who possessed exceptional taste, but little money, with well-designed practical and attractive pottery. Cooper’s pots became symbolic of the new domestic life enjoyed by the suburban middle classes.

Her career spanned seven decades and a staggering four thousand patterns ranging from the jazz modern colours of the Art Deco period to the Pop Art of the swinging sixties.
This centenary book outlines and discusses Susie Cooper’s major achievements throughout her prolific career. It brings together the leading experts and authorities who reflect upon her life and work, as well as providing contextual contemporary evidence on the twentieth century ceramic industry as a whole. For the very first time known aspects of her life will be brought together with the unknown, including new research material and information from her family. The focus of the book is on new information and original research to add to the understanding of one of our greatest ceramic designers.

Essays incorporated in this book include ‘Women Designers in Context’, ‘Unknown Susie Cooper’, ‘The Susie Cooper Style’, ‘Royal Connections’, ‘Pottery Patronage’ and ‘Susie Cooper and Wedgwood’.

The definitive guide to the work of this highly respected, contemporary ceramic designer.

The major achievements from her prolific career are discussed
Includes eighteen authoritative, comprehensive, essays
Facts about Susie Cooper’s life are revealed here, using, for the first time, new research material and information from her family.

Published to coincide with the Susie Cooper centenary and exhibitions of her work: Wedgwood Potteries Museum April 2002-Oct 2002 Croydon Museum Oct 2002 - Jan 2003.

Cats in English Porcelain of the 19th Century by Dennis Rice Cats in English Porcelain in the 19th century

Dennis Rice

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the first book to be published devoted exclusively to porcelain cats produced in this country during the 19th century. Cats were turned out by most of the principal porcelain factories operating during the period, including Rockingham, Derby, Chamberlain, Worcester, Grainger Lee Worcester, Royal Worcester, Minton, Copeland & Garrett (and its successor Copeland), Samuel Alcock, Charles Bourne, and Dudson, as well as by factories so far unidentified of which little is known except that they were located somewhere in Staffordshire.
The history is given of those factories whose identity is known, but the real emphasis and strength of the book lie in the illustrations (mostly in colour) which are both numerous and far ranging. Porcelain cats are rare, and very few examples of the period can be found in public museums. Accordingly all the illustrations are from private collections, auction houses, or dealers, and they afford the reader a unique opportunity of seeing how charmingly these perennially fascinating animals came to be represented in porcelain in this country during the 19th century.

Consideration is also given to the original market for these porcelain cats and the way in which they were distributed to the ultimate purchasers.

Dogs in English Porcelain of the 19th Century by Dennis Rice Dogs in English Porcelain of the 19th Century

Dennis Rice

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the first book to be directed exclusively to dogs in porcelain produced in this country during the 19th century. It identifies the individual breeds represented in this medium, which include greyhounds (both English and Italian), pugs, poodles (both as game animals and as pets), spaniels (particularly the King Charles variety), setters, pointers, dalmatians, great danes, mastiffs, salukis, terriers, wolf dogs, Pekingese and dachshunds.

Most of the major porcelain factories of the period produced dogs, including Rockingham Derby (at King Street as well as Nottingham Road), Chamberlain Worcester, Grainger Lee Worcester, Royal Worcester, Minton, Copeland & Garrett (and its successor Copeland), Davenport, Samuel Alcock, Charles Bourne, Lloyd Shelton, Madeley and Dudson, but some examples came from unidentified factories of which little is known except that they were located somewhere in Staffordshire.

The range and diversity of the dogs illustrated in this book (mostly in colour) give the reader a unique insight into the charming way in which the real dogs of the 19th century came to be represented in English porcelain.
