10639
Peter Monamy 1681-1749 and His Circle by F. B. Cockett Peter Monamy was the first English born and English trained specialist marine artist.

He recorded the marine scene of the first half of the 18th century, when English Commerce and Sea Power were growing rapidly.

He was a friend and contemporary of Hogarth and the precursor of the great school of English Sea Painters, including Samuel Scott, Charles Brookingand Dominic Serres, who were to follow him.

This book gives a detailed account of his life and, for the first time, a proper assessment of his enormous artistic output. His reputation has, in the past, been somewhat tarnished by the large number of ‘copies’ by other minor artists.

The author has been careful to illustrate only signed and undoubted examples of his work. Particular attention has been given to ‘recognition details’ of his technique and picture construction, which differentiate his work from others.

The last two chapters are given to considering, in some detail, the workof his ‘school’ of more minor, yet pleasing, artists who followed his tradition.

Charles Brooking (1723-1759) by David Joel Published by Antique Collectors' Club
ISBN No: 1 85149 277 1
Size: 8 1/2 x 11 ins
208pp 142 col. 172b&w 21line drawings

Charles Brooking is at the forefront of English marine painters, but since he died, aged thirty-six, in 1759, there was to be no recognition in his short life to justify his remarkable ability. He has probably produced the most atmospheric and beautiful marine paintings of all time. All his known pictures are illustrated and described in this much needed catalogue raisonné, together with all his known drawings and engravings. There is a chapter on eighteenth century London marine engravers written by James Taylor, a curator at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, London.
The book also describes the Dutch marine painters in the seventeenth century and shows how the English school developed following the Van de Velde's work at Greenwich. The book contains biographies of the British marine painters of the eighteenth century, illustrated from private collections and from Greenwich.
The appendices hold useful information from the eighteenth century concerning London in that period and the Royal Dockyards lower down the River Thames; lists of naval actions in Brooking's time showing the types of men o' war then in commission; the flags shown in Brooking's pictures; details of their dating from the various stylistic changes to the rigging, in the ships and in their boats; and the major collectors of Brooking's paintings.
This is the first book to fully cover the eighteenth century British marine painters in general terms and Charles Brooking in particular. It is badly needed by scholars, collectors, sale rooms, museums and art galleries.
The Author
David Joel has spent most of his working life in the Royal Navy and has commanded seven of Her Majesty's ships. In between his many sea-going appointments, he was fortunate to serve three times at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
David Joel is also a painter. He lives in a lighthouse at the entrance of the River Nene on the borders of Norfolk and Lincolnshire in East Anglia.

10636
Gardens of the Mind - The Genius of of Geoffrey Jellicoe Born in 1900, Geoffrey Jellicoe's working life spans virtually all the main developments in landscape and garden design of the 20th century; this thoughtful study of his contributions to these disciplines reveals the origins and forms of his genius.
Influences on his work have ranged from the writings of ancient Greeks to those of Carl Jung, and from classical art to Jackson Pollock, and these, together with his own particular vision, have given Jellicoe’s work an individuality and style that is internationally recognised.

While the significance of the worlds of art and ideas concerning the way man handles landscape can never be underestimated, in the work of Geoffrey Jellicoe we can see such interaction heightened to a thought-provoking level where we not only appreciate his work, but also question our own attitudes to our surroundings.

The author, himself an architect, records Jellicoe's education at the Architectural Association, and his early days in Italy with fellow architectural student Jock Shepherd which resulted in 1925 in the seminal work Italian Gardens of the Renaissance. Spens then traces architecture to landscape design, as illustrated by his work, first at Cheddar Gorge and then at Ditchley Park.

Through discussion of private garden commissions, such as those at Shute House and Sutton Place, and public projects like the renowned Kennedy Memorial at Runnymede, the Cheltenham and Turin sports complexes, and the monumental plans for the Moody Historical Gardens at Galveston, Texas, the author assesses Jellicoe's approach to the individual project and its existing landscape, and examines the symbolism and varied influences behind his thinking.

This book is unique as the first detailed study to explore the genius of a world-famous master in this field. It is essential reading for those interested in the history of landscape architecture in the 20th century, and for all students of the theory and practice of landscape and garden design.

A Breed Apart by William Secord This volume is a testament to our love for the dog, in all its guises, in conformation dog shows, field and obedience trials, in the sporting field and as a pet. It is also a testament to the many artists, some of whom virtually forgotten until recently, who chose to use their insights and artistic skills to portray the dog on canvas, paper and in porcelain and bronze.
Chronicled in this monumental volume is the combined encyclopedic collections of the American Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. Because of the enormity of the two collections, it was impossible to include everything - during the selection process only the very best of the collected works were chosen.
The collections are particularly comprehensive, and include not only nineteenth and twentieth century paintings and bronzes, but many watercolours, original prints, silver trophies, porcelains, and antique dog collars, each and every artifact directly related to dogs.
Accompanied by an authoritative text, the exceptional combined collection of the AKC and the AKC Museum of the Dog, illustrated here in full colour, not only provide a catalogue but also virtually tell the history of the dog in art. It is in this spirit that the book is organised, starting with the Belgium, Dutch and Flemish art in the collections, countries where dog and animal art originated. England - the true home of dog painting is explored next, then France, and finally America, where animal art was maintained and flourished well into the twentieth century.
The collections depicted in this volume are a testament to our love for the dog, in all its guises, in conformation dog shows, field and obedience trials, in the sporting field and as a pet. They are also a testament to the many artists, some of whom virtually forgotten until recently, who chose to use their insights and artistic skills to portray the dog on canvas, paper and in porcelain and bronze.

THE PRE-RAPHAELITE DREAM BY ROBERT UPSTONE The Pre-Raphaelite Dream showcases the range, virtuosity, and vision of the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood: Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Milliais and Edward Burne Jones, among others. Their familiar images are brought together here with undeservedly lesser known paintings by major artists and works by friends or followers of the Brotherhood members, as well as exceptional but rarely seen Pre-Raphaelite drawings. The Pre-Raphaelite created one of the great revolutionary movements of 19th century British art rejecting both the academic dryness of classicism and the vapid sentimentality of so-called genre painting. Instead using subjects taken from modern life, medievalism and literature they sought to explore such contemporary issues as gender, marriage, sex, and the fulfillment of love. Published to accompany an international travelling exhibition, this lavishly illustrated book provides a fresh look at a much-studied movements in the history of art.

H.C. Westermann by Adrian, Michael Dennis/Rooks

Book Description

The irony and antic sense of humor that animate the work of H. C. Westermann (1922–1981) and make it so accessible are evident on every page of this volume, the first comprehensive study of
the artist in over 20 years. Published to accompany a major traveling exhibition of Westermann’s
sculpture, the book looks at how defining themes central to 20th-century America—the horror and disillusionment of war, the mythology of the American utopia, and Hollywood and mass media—shaped his thought and his art.

Magnificent color illustrations accompany essays by Robert Storr, who evaluates Westermann in the context of 20th-century art; Lynne Warren, who looks at his years in Chicago in the 1950s; Dennis Adrian, a longtime friend, who surveys the artist’s entire oeuvre; and Michael Rooks, who examines his most elaborate achievement, the house and studio in Connecticut that the artist designed and built by hand from 1969 to 1981.

A Whitney Museum of American Art Publication
Introduction by Maxwell L. Anderson

The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City boasts an extensive and unparalleled collection of 20th- and 21st-century American art. This landmark publication, featuring the work of more than 280 artists in all mediums, presents the highlights of this collection in superb colorplates.

Organized by artist, the book underscores one of the Whitney’s unique characteristics—its philosophy of collecting in depth, across the boundaries of artistic mediums. Although each artist is represented by at least one illustration, many are represented by works in several different mediums. Brief texts by the Whitney’s curatorial staff as well as by outside experts in 20th-century American art set each artist’s work within a larger art historical framework.

An introduction by Maxwell L. Anderson, Director of the Whitney, discusses the history of the museum. This elegant book will be required reading for anyone interested in American art.

American Anthem - Masterworks from the American Folk Art Museum American Anthem
Masterworks from the American Folk Art Museum
By Stacy C. Hollander, Brooke Davis Anderson, and
Gerard C. Wertkin

A song of praise to the nation, American Anthem celebrates the symbols of liberty, ingenuity, and refuge indelibly imbedded in American folk art from colonial days through the present. This glorious full-color volume highlights treasures from the important collection of the American Folk Art Museum—works that will be on display from June through December 2002 as the second major exhibition at the museum’s new building in New York City.

From Log Cabin quilts and painted wood furniture to watercolors and oil paintings; from Hosea Hayden’s idiosyncratic folding chairs to the drawings of the octogenarian street artist and former slave Bill Traylor; from Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog, the masterpiece of 19th-century ancestral portrait artist Ammi Phillips, to works by the noted contemporary self-taught artist Thornton Dial Sr., here are 293 remarkable examples of this vital yet still underexamined touchstone to American culture.

Medieval Life and Leisure in the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries Medieval Life and Leisure
in the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries
A Victoria and Albert Museum Publication
By Linda Woolley

The only large-scale 15th-century tapestries in existence, the magnificent Devonshire Hunting Tapestries are a priceless resource. They provide a unique insight into medieval life, depicting a lost chivalric world in rich and fascinating detail.

The elaborate rituals of the hunt were an integral part of court etiquette in medieval and Renaissance Europe. These tapestries, once owned by the dukes of Devonshire, provide a vivid picture of the hunt in all its forms, and are also a rich repository of costume and textile history; author Linda Woolley mines them for all that they have to tell us about the fashions and customs of the time. The gorgeous illustrations include many stunning close-up details, with four eight-page color gatefolds showing the great tapestries in their entirety. This much-needed book on one of the Victoria and Albert Museum¹s greatest treasures opens a window onto the vanished world of the late Middle Ages.

Vital Forms: American Art and Design in the Atomic Age, 1940-1960 Vital Forms:
American Art and Design in the Atomic Age, 1940-1960
By Brooke Kamin Rapaport and Kevin L. Stayton, et al.

From the Studebaker and the Slinky7 to the TWA terminal and paintings by Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko, 1940 to 1960 was a compelling era for the arts in America. Artists and designers responded to the atomic-age anxieties of the postwar period with "vital" forms - organic imagery and biomorphic shapes based on nature. These forms proliferated during the optimism of the late '40s and '50s prosperity, in Tupperware7 and the Hula Hoop as well as Eames chairs and Calder mobiles.

Examining visual arts from an interdisciplinary perspective, Vital Forms focuses on the development and ascendancy of organic imagery. Essays placing the works in historical context, hundreds of photos, and an engaging mix of fine art and commercial design make this a must-have for serious art and design enthusiasts and fans of American popular culture.

Ottoman Embroidery by Marianne Ellis & Jennifer Wearden Ottoman Embroidery
By Marianne Ellis and Jennifer Wearden

A Victoria and Albert Museum Publication

A sumptuous addition to the Victoria and Albert Museum textile series, Ottoman Embroidery showcases in full color 150 stunning pieces from the museum's extensive collection. Dating from the mid-16th to the early 20th century, such common household items as napkins, towels, kerchiefs, and trousers have become exotic with age, and their ornate patterns are sure to inspire contemporary needleworkers. Twelve specially commissioned diagrams illustrate intricate techniques like the double-sided stitch - a 500-year-old style of embroidery still practiced today by a few skilled artisans.

To put the collection in context, an introductory text outlines the history of the Ottomans and their impact on European civilization. This image resource offers valuable information for fashion and interior designers.
