100 New York Painters by Cynthia Maris Dantzic This stunning book is the long-awaited result of an extensive review of New York painters and their widely diverse works. It presents an overview of styles, mediums, subjects, even philosophies of art found in galleries, museums, and artists' studios of present-day New York, the oft-acknowledged Art Capital of the contemporary world. Although you may recognize the names and works of many, this company of 100 painters also features works by artists less celebrated, though no less deserving of attention. Expect to find recent works, as well as paintings from an earlier period of an artist's oeuvre -- as near as Kelynn Alder's "Coney Island," painted specifically for this book, and as distant as George Tooker's iconic allegory, "Subway," painted in 1950. Brief biographical sketches accompany each artist's work, providing insight into their emotional and philosophical connection with art as well as their schooling and accomplishments. Experience for yourself this visual feast showcasing the unique works of 100 gifted New York painters. This book is a must-have addition for the library of any art connoisseur and/or collector.

Matisse Portraits by John Klein Book Description: New Haven, CT, U.S.A.: Yale University Press, 2001. Hard Cover. Fine. Reference Book. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The devotion of Henri Matisse to the human figure led him to make portraits of many different sitters--members of his family, fellow artists, professionals in other fields, patrons, and various others. At key points in his career, he was also an obsessive observer of himself, creating intense series of self-portraits. This pioneering book, with some 200 stunning illustrations, offers the first comprehensive account of Matisse's activity as a maker of portraits and self-portraits. Matisse scholar John Klein goes beyond standard approaches to portraiture that focus on questions of likeness and expression of character. He considers the transaction that produces a portrait--a transaction between the artist and the sitter (even when the sitter is oneself) that is social as much as artistic. Klein investigates the various social contexts of Matisse's sitters and finds that differences among these contexts produced different kinds of portraits and self- portraits with different goals. This was in part due to the personal and social identity of the sitter, but partly also to Matisse's self-perception with respect to the sitter and his goal of engaging the genre as a mode of personal expression. Klein also addresses the vexing question of whether depictions of hired models can be considered as portraits and concludes that they lack the social context that is necessary to portraiture. Through the psychological and contextual examination of Matisse's portraits and self-portraits, Klein throws new light on an important body of work by this influential artist. The author also discusses the portrait practice of some of Matisse's contemporaries--Picasso, Kirchner, Bonnard, Vallotton, and Boldini--to develop fresh insights into the status of portraiture within twentieth-century art as a whole.

The Golden Treasure Trove of the Russian Museum Over 200 pieces of Russian decorative art are illustrated, from the eleventh to the twentieth centuries from the major holdings of the Russian State Museum. Many of the pieces were created for the Russian Court and Orthadox Church, the two most important patrons in Russia before the revolution. Witnesses to a lengthy, turbulent past, the decorative objects featured in this beautiful book are ornamental, elaborately bejewelled, masterfully crafted and gloriously valuable. The pieces featured include bracelets from the twelfth century, signet rings from the thirteenth, icons from the sixteenth and seventeenth and chasubles from the eighteenth. Included are several treasure caches, accompanied by pieces of jewellery dating from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries; all were originally held in the Imperial Hermitage Museum and then transferred to the Russian Museum in 1930. Some of the more recent works featured include items by Faberge and various Art Nouveau pieces. All of the objects are, however, more than just witnesses of the past, precious ornaments. Presented here are works of decorative and applied art, created by the great Russian masters.

10704
Van Dyck : A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) is among the greatest portrait painters of all time. The 1990s opened and closed with major exhibitions devoted to his work and this is a catalogue raisonne of his painted oeuvre. A native of Antwerp, Van Dyck also lived and worked for long periods in Italy and England, where his brief, productive life ended. He is best known for his work at the court of Charles I of England and his images of Charles and his Queen, Henrietta Maria, combine imperial tradition with a lyricism that is unique. The full-length portraits of aristocrats in the Caroline court and in Genoa, Antwerp, Brussels and The Hague set a standard for elegance, grandeur and personal insight that influenced the history of Western portraiture into the 20th century in the work of John Singer Sargent. Like Titian, whom he admired and whose artistic legacy he transformed and handed on, Van Dyck was as gifted with religious and mythological subjects as he was with portraits. He pioneered means of expressing personal piety and intimacy that would dominate later 17th-and 18th-century religious art throughout Catholic Europe. This manual includes a reproduction of every known authentic painting by the artist, the provenance and the significant facts and literature on each. The catalogue raisonne is a collaboration and an international team has produced this study of an international artist.

Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599–1641) is among the greatest portrait painters of all time. The 1990s opened and closed with major exhibitions devoted to his work, and now the long-awaited catalogue raisonné of his painted oeuvre is complete.

A native of Antwerp, Van Dyck also lived and worked for long periods in Italy and England, where his brief, productive life ended. He is best known for his work at the court of Charles I. His full-length portraits of aristocrats in the Caroline court and in Genoa, Antwerp, Brussels, and The Hague influenced the history of Western portraiture into the twentieth century in the work of John Singer Sargent. Handsomely designed and illustrated, the volume includes a reproduction of every known authentic painting by the artist as well as the provenance and the significant facts and literature on each. This catalogue raisonné is, fittingly, the collaborative work of an international team devoted to the study of this major international artist.

Susan J. Barnes, an independent art historian, co-curated a Van Dyck exhibit in Washington, D.C., 1990. Nora De Poorter is director of the Rubenianum, Antwerp. Oliver Millar, Surveyor Emeritus of The Queen’s Pictures, organized an exhibition of Van Dyck’s English work at the National Portrait Gallery, London, 1982–83. Horst Vey, former director of the Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe, is author of the standard work on Van Dyck’s drawings.

Turner Whistler Monet by Katherine Lochnan Katharine A. Lochnan is a senior curator of prints and drawings at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Ian Warrell is a Tate curator and editor of Turner and Venice.

Book Description
J.M.W. Turner, James McNeill Whistler, and Claude Monet created some of the most poetic landscapes of the 19th century. This beautiful book, which accompanies a major traveling exhibition, follows the three artists from the Thames to the Seine to the Venetian lagoon and is the first to explore the relationships among their works.
Friends, collaborators, and rivals, Monet and Whistler adopted and built on themes first developed by Turner, including the creation of a series of views of the same landscape under different lighting and climatic conditions. Their attempts to imitate in oil the effects that Turner had achieved in watercolor and pastel transformed their style and would prove to be highly influential. In addition, they were inspired by Turner to seek beauty in the modern urban environment. In doing so, they created visionary works that contributed to Impressionism and Symbolism, and remain among the most beloved landscapes of the 19th century.

Abstraction has long been acknowledged to be one of the key concepts in 20th century art. The artists of the Russian avant-garde, above all Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich, made a leading contribution to the birth and establishment of this exciting movement.
This publication is the first attempt to bring together the wide range of materials reflecting the various paths trodden by artists working in non-objective forms in the 20th century. The album is based largely on the classical avant-garde paintings now in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, home to the world’s most representative collection of the art of this period. Works created in the second half of the 20th century have also been contributed by the Tretyakov Gallery, many of the artists themselves and several private collectors.
Artists of various generations are represented by some 1,200 works in two beautifully designed volumes.

No nation on earth has one absolute, primordial symbol. The color red, however, has always been favored by all nations. Red, as a concept and word combination became both an audible and visual image in Russia, particlularly so at the start of the 20th century. Russians identified the color red with physical phenomena and actions. Color images crossed over into the realms of concrete objects (red carpet); the Russian word “krasny” lost its original meaning ‘beautiful’ and came to be applied purely to the color red, which in turn crossed over to geographical names (Krasnaya Polyana, Krasnoye Selo). People grew accustomed to the color red and it entered the public consciousness. And no matter what the future course of Russian history, red will forever remain its principal emotional charge, carrying the potential of all that is solemn, warm and jubilant.

This volume is a celebration of the color red in Russian art. Red betrays a wealth of meanings. It has also been simply a patch of bright color with which to depict objects. It has enjoyed special significance in the works of talented artists of all time.
