Art Bronzes by Michael Forrest Here is an important and lavishly beautiful new study of the discovery, appreciation, recognition and selection of fine bronze statuary created during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This period was an era of great social and cultural change in which bronze sculpture managed to capture the evolving spirit of romance, turbulence and excitement. Art Bronzes presents over 1,100 illustrations, 200 in full color, and many pages of carefully researched text with relevant marks, inscriptions, artist signatures, dates, and foundry stamps. Over 450 well-and lesser-known artists in Romantic, Animal, Oriental, Frontier, Victorian, and Exotic styles working in Europe, Asia and the Americas are represented. Dealers, collectors, artists, and art historians all will find inspiration and important, newly discovered information in Art Bronzes

Russian Bronze : Encyclopedia of Russian Antiques Russian Bronzes. Encyclopedia of Russian Antiques
Igor Sychev
A project by Arkady Gaidamak with Igor Sychev
Series: Encyclopedia of Russian Antiques.
Trilistnik Publishing House. 2003. 232 pp.

Russian Bronzes is the first volume of the planned encyclopedia of Russian antiques "Ākānt." This book has been prepared by State Hermitage researcher Yu.O. Sychev and attempts to present in all their diversity of forms and typology bronze objects which were created by Russian masters from the 18th to early 20th centuries. Alongside Russian artisans there were a huge number of foreign masters who were engaged in the production of works in bronze. For them the enormous expanse of the Russian Empire was something new and unusual: the freedom to create, the relations with their client and even nature itself. What came to be called "Russian bronzes" was the fruit of this peculiar combination.

This volume is particularly valuable due to its numerous illustrations of the best examples of Russian decorative bronzes and light fixtures from the collections of museums in Moscow and St Petersburg, many published here for the first time. The book has a glossary of terms and guide to the masters. This publication is intended for museum staff, antiques dealers, collectors and all those who love beautiful things.

Bronze Sculpture Casting & Patination This magnificent and beautiful work includes an extensive and illuminating text paired with an exceptional collection of 646 color photographs and 78 line drawings of the processes involved in forming metal sculpture, as well as contemporary and historic examples.
The author describes in detail the two techniques used to form sculpture castings in metal: the lost wax (cire perdu) method, and the modern variant of sand casting.
Metal finishing processes on sculptures are explored in detail. One of the remarkable features of the cooperation given by Pangolin Editions, the largest sculpture foundry in Britain, is the presentation of 114 patination recipes, developed over 20 years by Rungwe Kingdon, Director of Pangolin. For a patinator to give away his trade secrets is not just unusual, it is unprecedented.
Hurst describes the importance of metal casting in art education, based on his 35 years of experience teaching sculpture students in universities and apprentices in the engineering industry. The book is an important addition to the libraries of art schools and universities as well as professional and amateur sculptors.

Small Bronzes in the Renaissance by Debra Pincus Studies in the History of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington. Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts

Book Description
This far-ranging book presents the most recent research on small-scale bronze production of the Renaissance. The contributors to the volume--an international group of curators, art historians, and conservators--analyze the production and collecting of small bronze sculptures from the fifteenth through the early seventeenth century in both Italy and the North. They offer new assessments and attributions of these fascinating works of art, the result of an intense collaboration between artists and collectors. The book sheds light on the origins of the "household" bronze in Florence around the middle of the fifteenth century and on the groundbreaking developments in North Italy that followed. It reexamines the contribution of Donatello and his immediate followers in the first stages of bronze production as well as proposing a number of new attributions. Among the book's other topics are casting procedures, including a proposal for a method used by Donatello; the spread of technological and artistic advances from Italy into the Northern countries; the work and workshop practices of sculptors of North Italy; and the assembling of personalized collections of small bronzes by German, English, and American connoisseurs from the eighteenth century to our own.

Large Bronzes in the Renaissance by Peta Motture Peta Motture is Senior Curator of Sculpture and Medieval & Renaissance Galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Book Description
Large bronzes are rarely considered as a category in their own right. This volume explores key issues associated with large-scale bronze production in Europe from the fifteenth through early seventeenth centuries. Featuring recent research by an international group of sixteen prominent curators, art historians, and conservators, the book presents a variety of perspectives on the production of large bronzes, including great works by major artists and the role of the foundry in their manufacture. Nearly 300 duotone images illustrate the beauty and diversity of these Renaissance sculptures. The essays collected here demonstrate the range of approaches and resources that can be applied for analyzing bronzes in depth and for understanding their setting within a broader cultural context. These include technical examination and analysis involving collaboration between curator and scientist, as well as archival and literary research.

Animals in Bronze by Christopher Payne In 1831 Antoine-Louis Barye exhibited at Tiger and Gavial's. His inspiration came from Les Jardins des Plantes, the Paris zoo where he had studied animals in the flesh, rather than from heroic imagination.
The animals were the subject of his works in their own right and not subservient to some human story. The accuracy of his work even led one critic to remark: The reality of this piece is so vivid that one feels followed by the odour of the menagerie
Barye's work was in tune with the movement which was taking place in all forms of art, towards the realistic and romantic and away from the use of clumsy classical. This superbly illustrated book not only describes the work of Barye and artists traditionally associated with the animalier school, but includes the work of Troubetzkoy, Bugatti, Pompon, the American, Haseltine, such artists as John Willis Good and Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, and brings us to the many talented artists of the present day, Kenworthy, Timym and Yarrow among them.
There is practical information too; the reader learns the technical processes involved in modelling and casting, the importance of colour and patination and the problems to be found in the market place. There is an index of sculptors and founders which includes some seven hundred names.
This is the ideal book both for the collector, people who love animals in art and those whose living requires a sound knowledge of the work of les animaliers and their successors.
