10544

Victorian and Edwardian Furniture by John Andrews Wappingers Falls, NY, U.S.A.: Antique Collectors' Club, 2001. Brand New. This book is a major revision and enlargement of the highly acclaimed Price Guide to Victorian, Edwardian and 1920s Furniture. In this logical and easily understandable guide to what is still the most popular (and perhaps most confusing) period in antique furniture and collecting today, John Andrews discusses all the points that constitute value, whether influenced by construction, fashion or economic trends.

Now exclusively comprising Victorian and Edwardian Furniture, of which 1,000 items are illustrated, this book reveals the mysteries of its subject in a completely revised section on the periods myriad styles, from Rococo and Gothic to Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts. Arranged alphabetically by furniture type, from bookcases to whatnots, each section of the book is lavishly illustrated. Many of the illustrations are new to this revision and they are among the reasons why this book will be the best general survey and the standard reference on its subject for many years to come.

To sum it up: A major revision of what is acknowledged as the best general survey of this major collecting area . Written in straightforward, down-to-earth language, discusses works accessible to most collectors, not museum pieces ! Lavishly illustrated with clear informative photographs; follows the movement in prices over more than a decade giving them an historical perspective .

About the author: John Andrews is both a founding member and the first author published by the Antique Collectors Club. His professional background as a market researcher and his love of furniture have made his books unique in their clear explanations and their practical, factual approach. His original book, 'The Price Guide to Antique Furniture', came out in 1968 and has continued to sell strongly in revised editions ever since. It was then the first of its kind and, now entitled British Antique Furniture: Price Guide and Reasons for Values, it has gained widespread respect from reviewers, dealers, auctioneers and collectors for over twenty-five years. Apart from collecting, restoring and writing about furniture, he is still an active businessman and fiction writer. Under the pseudonym John Malcolm he writes the art-antique crime novels featuring art investment expert Tim Simpson. ..Size: 279 x 216 mm., 300 pages, 100 full color AND 1,000 b&w illustrations.

10535

Oak Furniture - The British Tradition by Victor Chinnery Victor Chinnery’s scholarly work covers the history and development of furniture in oak and kindred timbers in the British Isles and New England, from the Middle Ages through to 1800. The subject is broken down into a logical sequence of aspects and each section is generously illustrated. The furniture shown ranges from the finest examples of the period, to the sort of sturdy and workmanlike pieces which modern collectors will find afforsable.

The study of oak furniture is a remarkably rich and varied subject, which reflects at several levels the social and domestic life of many generations of our ancestors. Victor Chinnery has explored and clarified many important topics, whilst fully realising that scholarship in this field is still very much in its infancy.

One of the most profound influences on the appearance of furniture in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was the system of rigid demarcations operated by the different furniture making trades, and in which the work of the joiners was the most important. The author explains the techniques and materials of the different trades, as well as other considerations of vital interest to the modern collector and curator.

The furniture of Connecticut and Massachusetts in the seventeenth century is presented as an extension of the range of styles to be found in other English provinces at the same date.

The standard work of reference on the subject, consulted by dealers, collectors, auctioneers, valuers and students of furniture.

A reprint of the first major book on oak furniture for more than half a century.

Provides an amazing range of superb illustrations with a clear classification of the furniture, all within the context of the period
Contains a pictorial index with items arranged in chronological order for quick and easy identification.

The Author:

Victor Chinnery was born in London in 1944, but spent most of his childhood in South Wales. A teacher of art and geography by training, he started dealing in antiques during his college days in London in the mid-1960s.
His first venture was to share a stall at Portobello Road and he quickly discovered an instinctive regard for early furniture, pottery, metal-work and carvings.

After a few years teaching in London, interspersed with work as a film designer and potter, he moved to Salisbury in 1970 and set up as a specialist dealer in early oak furniture and associated objects. He lives in Wiltshire, with his wife Jan and daughter Kate. He now runs a specialist consultancy business, advising a number of private and institutional clients on matters of early furniture and restoring early buildings. His regular clients include Sotheby’s and Birmingham City Museums.

His knowledge and love of oak furniture have prompted him to devote a great deal of time to research and writing, in an effort to expand the available literature, and this book constitutes his first major work on the subject.

The Well-Worn Interior by Robin Forster & Tim Whittaker

The conceit of the style of interior decoration showcased in this attractive volume centers on the organic appeal of handmade and distressed surfaces, such as worn furniture and fixtures, old walls and panelling, and antiques made of materials that highlight the hand of the artisan. The interiors are in old residences and flats mainly in Europe (both authors are based in London) and reflect decades of real use.

Following the photos are brief sections on practical techniques and details, such as hallways, flooring, decorative plaster, textiles, limewash, and graining. There is a glossary and list of suppliers, but no index.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victorian architect-designer E. W. Godwin (1833–1886), tying himself neither morally nor aesthetically to a single style, approached design with what he called “judicious eclecticism.” Seeking to design furniture appropriate to the needs of modern living, he grappled with the problems of affordability, utility, and function and experimented with modular and fitted furniture decades before it became popular in the mid-twentieth century. This book is the first comprehensive study of Godwin’s furniture designs. Taking the form of a catalogue raisonné, the book documents and reproduces all known examples of his secular furniture and related furniture designs.

Susan Weber Soros traces the development of Godwin’s style, examines its sources, and assesses the historical importance of his work. She discusses how Godwin combined antiquarian interests with the study of more recent design traditions from different parts of the world, including Japan. Godwin worked in six major styles: Gothic revival, Anglo-Japanese, Anglo-Greek, Anglo-Egyptian, Queen Anne or Cottage style, and Old English or Jacobean. Soros also describes his work for leading art manufacturers; the work he exhibited at great international exhibits in Vienna, Philadelphia, and Paris; and his role as designer of choice for such leading artists of his generation as James McNeill Whistler and Oscar Wilde.

Cincinnati Art-Carved Furniture and Interiors by Jennifer Lowe - Softcover Cincinnati Art-Carved Furniture and Interiors

Edited by Jennifer L. Howe

A remarkable presentation of hand-carved furnishings and woodwork from late-nineteenth-century Cincinnati that reflect the city's energetic re sponse to the Aesthetic movement.

Published in association with the Cincinnati Art Museum
Art History: 264 pp., 81/2 x 11, 75 duotones, 65 color illustrations,

In the early 1850s three British expatriates—Henry Lindley Fry, his son William Henry Fry, and Benn Pitman—settled in Cincinnati and launched one of the most important manifestations of Aesthetic movement furniture in the United States, the Cincinnati art-carved furniture movement. By the early 1870s the Frys began offering private instruction in woodcarving, and Pitman initiated classes at the School of Design (later the Art Academy of Cincinnati).

The majority of the woodcarving students were affluent women seeking suitable artistic pastimes, although some students enrolled to learn a marketable skill. The Frys and Pitman and their female students gained national acclaim and recognition for their woodcarving through their display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. National art journals featured Cincinnati woodcarving throughout the late 1870s and the 1880s and published articles by Pitman, a proliWc writer and philosopher of the movement.

Cincinnati Art-Carved Furniture and Interiors is the first book devoted to the study of this nationally significant artistic movement. Edited by Jennifer L. Howe, with contributions by noted scholars, Cincinnati Art-Carved Furniture and Interiors situates the movement within the context of the city’s rich cultural heritage, documents the careers of the Frys and Pitman in England and America, explores their domestic and ecclesiastical interior commissions, and examines the central role women played in this movement.

The book includes a catalog of the Cincinnati Art Museum’s impressive holdings of Cincinnati art-carved furniture. An appendix presents biographical information on more than one thousand of the Frys’ and Pitman’s woodcarving students, and numerous color plates and period photographs.
