An American Odyssey - The Warner Collection of American Fine and Decorative An American Odyssey - The Warner Collection of American Fine and Decorative Arts by Tom Armstrong

Book Description
An American Odyssey is the story of Jonathan Westervelt Warner, an entrepreneur, art collector, and philanthropist. The volume is both a record of the collection -- important American fine and decorative arts -- and a personality study of a warm-spirited and generous man. Jack Warner started to collect art to complement his family’s Gulf States Paper Corporation headquarters in Alabama. Since 1970, the collection has become an unparalleled assembly of eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century American art; it also reflects Warner’s strong interest in American history and his sense of patriotism and heritage.
Among the portrait, landscape, and history paintings in the collection are seminal works such as Progress by Asher B. Durand, The Falls of Kaaterskill by Thomas Cole, Above the Clouds at Sunrise by Frederic E. Church, and Niagara Falls by Albert Bierstadt. Also included are works by John James Audubon, James Peale, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth, as well as masterworks by America’s most famous craftspeople, such as Paul Revere and Duncan Phyfe. Engaging essays explore various facets of Warner and his collection: a fascination with George Washington and other patriotic symbols; a life-long interest in architecture; and the history of the nation as portrayed by its most important artists.

About the Author
Tom Armstrong has been the director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Andy Warhol Museum.

The book is brand new and authographed by Jack Warner

Danish Modern and Beyond Book Description

The sleek lines of Danish Modern furniture took the design world by storm in the mid-twentieth century. Among the American companies that manufactured this style of furniture was the Heywood-Wakefield Co., based in Gardner, Massachusetts. Known widely today for their lines of blonde furniture, Heywood-Wakefield addressed the American family's desire for an informal yet sophisticated look through its Danish Modern and related lines produced in the 1950s and 1960s. Here are original Heywood-Wakefield catalog images of Danish inspired living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture, featuring original catalog descriptions, model numbers, and measurements for all pieces. American Furniture in Pendleton House by Christopher Monkhouse Book Description: Providence; Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design: 1986. First edition. Charles Pendleton was one of a group of pioneering collectors of Americana which included Marsden Perry, George Palmer, Thomas B. Clarke, and of course, Luke Vincent Lockwood. He was depicted in Eben Howard Gay's "A Chippendale Romance" in the person of Mr. Remington, a premiere collector of American Chippendale furniture, a "man of middle age and serious aspect, (with) the ferret-like nose of the antiquarian, and a sonorous voice whose tones deepened into thrilling vibrations when discoursing upon his pet hobby.". His pet hobby soon became a business, and he became one of the first of the major Americana collector/dealers. His premier collection was one of the first to be presented to an institution, and a specially designed house was built to hold it. A leader of the "scrape and refinish" school, his star became somewhat eclipsed in the decades after his death, but this cannot obscure the beauty and importance of the magnificent collection he built. A full account of his life and collecting is presented in this catalog, which presents the American furniture from the collection, and includes pieces bought since Pendleton's death. Softcover. 9"x12", 228 pages, many b/w and several color illustrations

Sloan's Victorian Buildings: Illustrations and Floor Plans for 60 Residence Product Description:
The original edition of The Model Architect (1852-3) is reprinted here with Sloan’s influential designs for pre-Civil War mansions, villas, churches, schoolhouses and other buildings. Over 100 lithographs display the buildings in perspective, with front, rear and side elevations. Plus floor plans, scale drawings, more. 114 plates.

This book is an excellent starting source for those interested in all aspects of Victorian architecture. There are essays on various styles of Victorian architecture, most notably the "revivals" of Gothic, Italianate, Norman, even Oriental styles. There are also discursions on certain techniques, such as joinery. The houses are quite often pictured as front and side elevations, and all are accompanied by floor plans, however some do not include plans of the attics and cellars. For most of the houses, there are complete materials and cost specifications, although naturally these are slightly outdated. All in all, this is a very interesting and informative work for the architectural history enthusiast. It is not very suitable as a source for those who wish to gather design ideas for a modern Victorian-styled house, as the styles pictured here are not those typically featured as "Victorian".
