Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design by E. White As the Georgian house in any provincial British town demonstrates, the 18th century was a period of disciplined design.
Styles came, went and reappeared, but within the range of classicism, chinoiserie, Gothic or rococo certain basic proportions were applied by craftsmen according to their aesthetic sense and skill. It was much the same with furniture.
This satisfying predictability stemmed largely from the published pattern books which proliferated as the century progressed and, disseminated through printsellers and bookshops, provided the basis for production of that perennial favourite ‘the new and latest style’, both in London and the provinces.
The 3,500 designs in this book more than double the number previously appearing together in print. They include virtually all the known designs published in the 18th century. These, grouped together by type, provide an essential reference for anybody with an interest in British furniture, for it will facilitate attribution and help in more accurately establishing dates.
It is the companion volume to the classic Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, edited by Edward Joy.

10605

Continental Church Furniture in England by Charles Tracy This is the first book on the history of the virtually unknown phenomenon of the importation of Continental church furniture into England since the early 19th century. Lavishly illustrated, well over one hundred pieces, from pulpits to choir stalls, are discussed in detail.
The taste for this furniture was fuelled by the Romantic medievalising enthusiasm of Augustus Welby Pugin and the Catholic Revival, as well as the eccentric whims of the Anglican Squiresons. It was clandestinely acquired mainly from France and the Low Countries by English antique dealers and other enterprising agents, including architects and the aristocracy, as a result of the catastrophic upheavals of the French Revolution. Surprisingly, much of the furniture is in the Baroque style.
The historical setting for this nostalgic explosion is described, as well as an account of some of the more unusual patronage, and the story is pursued into the 20th century. The second half of the book comprises a discussion of the most important specimens in the national collection, and their provenance, as well as a gazetteer of such material throughout England.

10602

English Country Furniture 1500-1900 by David Knell The literature on English period furniture has largely been dominated by a preoccupation with that of the rich and upper classes, resulting in a neglect of the humbler pieces used in more ordinary homes over the centuries. This attitude is now regarded as unacceptable, however, and the past everyday furniture of England has accordingly become the focus of intensive research.

This book, the first major production of its kind and now a classic reference work, examines the pieces found in humbler urban and rural homes over a span of some four centuries, throwing fresh light on such aspects as regionalvariations, dating assessment, construction techniques, stylistic influenceand context. Each of the many examples illustrated, most of them previouslyunpublished in book form, is accompanied by a detailed caption giving timber,a realistic date range and an extensive description, including such informationas local characteristics, finish, distinctive decorative features and manufacturing methods.

In this second edition both the format and the text have been thoroughlyrevised and the number of illustrations greatly increased.

The English Regional Chair by Bernard D. Cotton
This is arguably the most detailed study ever made of any branch of British furniture. It covers in considerable depth, on a region by region basis, the work of hundreds of craftsmen, spread throughout the country, working in the general tradition of the area but superimposed with their own individual design ‘signatures’.

Employing a remarkable combination of talents, the author has examined thousands of regional chairs, researched local archives, conducted field studies, collected anecdotal evidence and used computers to relate the evolution of known types and makes. The result is a living account of the development of countless styles of chairs from all over England and the way of life of the craftsmen who produced them.

This authoritative book has revolutionised the collecting and the study of vernacular furniture. It is quoted in auction catalogues and consulted avidly by collectors as hundreds of new makers’ names emerge from the blanket anonymity of ‘Windsor’, ‘ladder back’, ‘spindle back’, and other generalisations. It is a key standard work of reference, encyclopaedic in its breadth of information and illustration.

The Author

Dr Bernard (Bill) Cotton is a researcher and lecturer specialising in the history of regional furniture traditions. He is Visiting Professor of Furniture at Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education, High Wycombe, and Visiting Professor of Furniture History at Southampton Institute of Higher Education.

His research takes him to all parts of Britain and abroad, particularly North America, where he is involved with field work projects, recording furniture in traditional settings and evaluating its social history. Following two years of field research in the fishing communities of Newfoundland he has recently produced an exhibition of furniture from that country, with examples showing its antecedents in the British traditions. The exhibition has travelled to major museums throughout Canada, 1995-1997, and was funded by the Canadian and Newfoundland Governments.
When he is not getting to know furniture he is to be found fly-fishing for brown trout on the River CoIn, near to his home in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds.

18th Century English Furniture The Norman Adams Collection by Stevens ETAL But it is far from being just a series of fine photographs for it concentrates principally on the British mahogany furniture of the eighteenth century, a period when British design and craftsmanship reached its pinnacle, a fact amply verified by the sustained demand for these fine pieces.
Yet it is a period which curiously enough has, apart from some specialist work, been largely neglected by serious writers on the subject for many years.
The book contains some 475 black and white and 56 colour photographs. The illustration of so many fine pieces, as well as unusual items, superbly photographed, would in itself have earned this book a place on the shelves of anyone seriously interested in the subject. But there is an added bonus. A firm like Norman Adams prospers by the skill of the selection in buying – a ‘good eye’ – and it is this essential facility, succinctly expressed in the captions to the pieces in this book, which will ensure its lasting reputation as an important work of reference.

Regency Furniture by France Collard Regency Furniture

Frances Collard

Regency furniture is popularly defined as the furniture produced in the period 1790-1840 and this definition is followed here.
These fifty years produced some of the most inventive and decorative furniture that has ever been made, for the end of the eighteenth century saw the move away from strict Palladian influence which produced the staid, respectable furniture beloved by generations of scholars, dealers and collectors.

However, in the last fifty years the shortage of ‘Georgian’ furniture and the realisation that Regency furniture meets the decorative requirements of overseas buyers has led to a complete reappraisal of the production of these turbulent years. The story is complex and fascinating, both from the design as well as social aspects, and apart from Margaret Jourdain’s pioneer work in 1948 there has been no standard text on what has now become one of the most expensive and least understood periods of English furniture.

For the influences on Regency design and taste were legion: from Sheraton’s neoclassicism, Henry Holland’s Anglo-French taste, the Greek revival of Thomas Hope, and the Chinoiserie favoured by the Prince Regent, to an interest in the Gothic, Old English and rustic. Patrons, newly rich from the Industrial Revolution or with wealth derived from the Colonies, encouraged furniture makers to indulge in novelties of invention to satisfy the demands of fashion. Many master craftsmen and cabinet makers, both in London and the provinces, who also became important influences on the period, such as Bullock of Liverpool, Gillows of Lancaster, Hervé, Pugin, Sheraton and Chippendale, all contributed to the exchange of new ideas and splendid craftsmanship.

Frances Collard, of the Victoria and Albert Museum, carefully explains the interrelated influences of Royal and wealthy patrons on architects, interior designers and furniture makers, as well as the demands of the less affluent which were involved in this extraordinary era of creativity. Her fascinating text is complemented with 40 colour plates and 304 black and white illustrations.

The Author

Frances Collard began her museum career at the Army Museums Ogilby Trust, a charitable trust offering financial and practical help to military museums.
She joined the Department of Textiles, Victoria and Albert Museum, in 1973, where she worked on gothic and medieval tapestries and other historic textiles, and moved to the Department of Furniture and Interior Design in 1979. Her main responsibility is the archive of material relating to the history of furniture and of interiors and she has lectured and written on a range of subjects, including tapestries, the role of textiles in the historic interior, upholstery and early nineteenth century furniture and interior decoration.

Her current research is a study of the furniture designed by Sir John Soane and she is preparing a book of original curtain designs. Mrs. Collard is married to an interior designer and lives in West London.

English Furniture 1660-1714 from Charles II to Queen Anne
English Furniture from Charles II to Queen Anne

Adam Bowett

The Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
English Furniture describes the development of fashionable English furniture between the restoration of Charles II in 1660 and the death of Queen Anne in 1714. Based largely on contemporary documents and on original and firmly documented furniture, together with the latest modern scholarship, it provides a closely-reasoned analysis of changing furniture styles, together with much technical information on materials and processes. The author’s radical new approach to the stylistic and structural analysis of furniture will change perceptions of English furniture and establish a new chronology for late seventeenth and early eighteenth century English furniture. This extensively illustrated book is the first comprehensive review of the subject for nearly one hundred years. Part one focuses on Charles II and James II, 1660-1688 with chapters on The Restoration, Case Furniture, Seat Furniture, Tables, Stands and Mirrors and Lacquer, japanning and varnish. The second part focuses on William III and Queen Anne, 1689-1714 and includes chapters on Furnishing the Williamite Court, Case Furniture, Seat Furniture, Tables, Stands and Looking Glasses. A full glossary of terms is inlcuded as well as a list of manuscript sources and a bibliography.

10233

THE SHAKER CHAIR BY CHARLES R. MULLER & TIMOTHY RIEMAN For well over a century, the world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that "If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that." In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and detailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture.

The Work of Many Hands: Card Tables in Federal America 1790-1820 REPRINT PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REPRINT BOOK - Originally printed in New Haven, CT Yale University Art Gallery 1982. Good, Softcover. 198pp. This extraordinary study of the regional characteristics of a single furniture form is a gratifying example of scientific methodology harnessed to serve the arts.

Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Yale University Art Gallery, the book is largely based on Benjamin A. Hewitt's ten-year computer study of the form, ornament, and construction of nearly 400 federal period card tables from three broad geographic areas and nine urban centers in the Eastern United States.

The study is given breadth and texture by Gerald Ward's essay on early American card-playing and by Patricia Kane's chapter on the role of design and price books in standardizing card table manufacture; but the heart of the presentation is Hewitt's comprehensive statistical analysis.
